CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Lily turned over everything Abe had said in her head. âSo why did you sign up to fight?â she asked.
He shrugged. âFor revenge. Pure and simple.â
LiIy nodded. She understood. When news of her dadâs death had arrived, sheâd felt like sheâd wanted to go and fight someone too.
âI wanted to kill some Germans,â Abe went on. âBecause theyâd killed him. My brave brother.â He shook his head and swallowed. âHe was only eighteen years old.â
Lily frowned. She could remember her mum talking about the battle of Omaha Beach and she was sure it hadnât happened very long ago. âHow old are you?â
âUm . . . eighteen,â said Abe.
Lilyâs frown deepened. âBut you said he was your big brother?â
Abe cleared his throat. âThatâs right. We were born close is all.â
Lily raised her eyebrows. âYou know something â back home we have a saying: you canât kid a kidder.â
Abe faltered. âMeaning what?â
She folded her arms and fixed him with a stern look. âMeaning that Iâve told my fair share of lies and so I know one when I hear one, Abe.â
âIâm not lying!â Abe protested. âIâm eighteen. Iâm . . . Iâm a soldier on a secret mission.â
âSo what is this secret mission?â she challenged.
âI can see you donât understand the meaning of âsecretâ!â he said, attempting to joke.
She continued with her unimpressed stare.
âOkay, well . . .â He hesitated. âIf you must know, Iâm . . . Iâm a member of a special forces unit and because of that I have to get to Liverpool. Thatâs where I was heading when I got injured. Itâs such a secret mission that the regular army donât even know about it, which is why I told yâall not to tell anyone. Please now, donât say anything. Iâll leave and you wonât see me again.â
Lily considered it. There was a chance he could be telling the truth but there was still the thing about his age. How could he and his older brother both be eighteen? Questions boiled in her brain, but looking at his pleading face she came to a decision. Whatever the truth, he was away from home and needed help. Maybe he also had a mum back at home, waiting for him, worrying about him. She, Pattie and Ted had been lucky to end up with Bobbie and Annie. He didnât have anyone.
âSo youâve got to get to Liverpool then?â
He nodded.
âWell, youâre in luck,â she told him. âTrains run through this station to Liverpool every day or two.â
Abe sat up straight. âReally?â
She nodded. âItâs the same line we came on from Manchester.â
Hope dawned on Abeâs face. âLily, do you think you could find me the time of the Liverpool trains?â he asked eagerly.
âYeah, sure. Tomorrow. But now Iâd better go home,â she said, getting to her feet. âTheyâll be worried about me. Iâll come back after school, okay?â
He nodded. âOkay â and, Lily?â
She paused. âWhat?â
Abeâs grateful brown eyes met hers. âThanks.â
Back at the house, Thomas, Ted and Pattie were sitting at the kitchen table, their cocoa untouched.
